Bungoma senator-elect Moses Wetangula escaped unhurt on Thursday evening when his car came under gunfire along Mbagathi Way, Nairobi.
The incident occurred a few minutes to eleven Thursday evening.
The senator had just arrived in the city from Mombasa and was on his way home to Karen from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Travelling with him was his driver and an aide when shots rang out from a car that had been parked across the road, shattering the windscreen and grazing the roof.
Accompanied by former Prime minister, Raila Odinga and his spokesperson Maseme Machuka, Wetangula proceeded to the Kilimani police station to record a statement.
He termed the attack as an assignation attempt as he had received anonymous death threats.
“I take this as an assassination attempt. The police have to move with speed and open investigations into the matter.”
He added that the threats came after he spoke out over irregularities in the rail tendering process.
“After I spoke about rail tender, an anonymous person called and warned me against speaking ill of the rail tender.”
The former prime minister termed the incident as unfortunate and urged the police and the government to investigate fully.
“I have been to the scene of the incident which is near the Mbagathi round-about which is manned by the police. This speaks volumes! We want the government to take the opportunity to investigate fully and we leave the matter to the police,” he said.
According to Nairobi County Police commander, Benson Kibue, the incident occured at 10:45pm. The senator and his team were driving along Mbagathi Way from Jomo Kenyatta International airport when they were shot at twice with one shot grazing the roof of the car.
They did not stop but drove on to a road block on Ngong Road where the police manning the post advised them to report at a police station whereby they proceeded to Kilimani Police station to record a statement just before midnight.
The police confirm that they are investigating and working to bring the matter to a speedy conclusion.
