Kenyan Muslims issue warning over cleric killings

The Muslim community in southern Kenya has threatened mass protests if the government does not make progress on the spate of murderers targeting Muslim clerics in the next three days.

Tensions are rising in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa after the killing this week of the Islamist cleric Sheikh Abubakar Shariff. It was the latest in a recent string of murders targeting Muslim leaders in the country.
Shariff had been accused by the United Nations and Washington of being a recruiter for al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist group from Eastern Africa. He repeatedly denied those accusations, even while justifying attacks by Islamist extremists.
The murders have led to allegations that Kenya's security forces are engaged in a systematic campaign of extrajudicial killings.
Muslim leaders say the government is not doing enough to identify and arrest the clerics’ murderers, threatening to launch massive street protests if authorities do not take action soon.
